Yankees: The Yankees finally got their big hit. Volpe’s go-ahead grand slam off Daniel Hudson with two outs in the third inning was the breakthrough blast the Yankees needed. It electrified the sold-out crowd. It supplied the club oxygen. Most importantly, it gave them a lead for the first time since Freeman’s walk-off grand slam in Game 1. New York added six runs against the Dodgers’ bullpen, marking the first time the Yanks have won a game in this postseason by more than three runs. The outburst ensured they’ll live to play another day. Will it be the turning point in a historic comeback? It’s at least a start. — Jorge Castillo

Outside of an Aaron Judge walk…nothing going for the Yanks in the bottom of the eighth. Juan Soto lined out, and then both Giancarlo Stanton and Jazz Chisholm struck out. (Stanton fell victim to another generous interpretation of the strike zone.)
After Mookie Betts flied out, Freddie Freeman hit a two-run home run to right field to give the Dodgers a 2-0 lead. Freeman has hit home runs in a record-tying five consecutive World Series games, dating back to 2021 (George Springer also achieved the feat in 2017, 2019).

Game 2 world series
• Yamamoto was exactly what the Dodgers needed, delivering the 11th start of at least six innings and one or no hits allowed in World Series history. It was the first of those by a rookie and the second by a Dodger, joining Rich Hill in Game 4 in 2018.
The big question for Game 3: As the Dodgers celebrated taking the first two games of the World Series, they did so with a question in the back of their minds: Will they have Ohtani at full strength for the rest of the series? Ohtani, who was caught stealing in the seventh inning, was helped off the field by training staff. An on-field microphone caught him saying his left shoulder was injured. After the game, Roberts said that it was a shoulder subluxation and the Dodgers were “encouraged” by the initial results before further testing.
The Dodgers hope to get similar length from Game 2 starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto that they got from Jack Flaherty, who pitched into the sixth in the opener. There’s an off-day after Game 2, but with a bullpen day looming in the middle of the Series, the Dodgers don’t want to overexpose their relievers.
